Why this petition matters

Started by Vanessa Makhlouf

In the face of the pandemic, schools have been forced to convert to Distance Learning and students have been forced to adapt quickly because their GPA is at risk. It is very unrealistic for students to efficiently be able to adjust from a regular in-person 7 hour school day to a whooping 6 hours in front of a screen emitting harsh blue light, not to mention the technical difficulties students are already facing. In addition, much of the homework given requires students to use computers, furthering their screen time to roughly 9-10 hours a day. From the time we are in elementary school we are asked to write about the consequences of screen time, and as many people know, they range from limited comprehension ability to vision damage. For reference, Cope Middle School and Yucaipa High, have a much more effective block schedule that gives students a chance to get away from their screen and time to process the new material presented to them. The students at these schools don’t have any complaints and are able to focus their full attention to their school work, not worrying about screen time. The attempt to better the schedule by implementing the 8 minute passing period was not very successful. 8 minutes is not enough time to rest ones eyes, use the restroom, and/or getting something to eat. We NEED a block schedule that gives us shorter days. It is a necessity.
