As someone who loves Michigan, I am deeply connected to the state's rich history and unique geographical features. The current "seal on a bedsheet" flag, although rich in history, fails to capture the essence of our beloved state, and is seldomly flown throughout the state. Accordingly, this petition proposes adopting the "Mackinac Flag" or "Mighty Mac Flag," a redesign that truly represents Michigan's identity and that can be flown with pride throughout the state.

The chosen colors of blue and white reflect water, winter, and Michigan as the “Water Wonderland” or “Water-Winter Wonderland.” Green represents Michigan as a frontier state, as well as the Lower and Upper peninsulas.

The proposed design incorporates blue triangles ("pyramidals") forming what I call the "Mackinac (Bridge) Cross", symbolizing the four Great Lakes Michigan is adjacent to. A broken green strip in this design signifies our the peninsulas, connected by the Mackinac Bridge (white strip). The cross also stands for Michigan’s prominence in the auto industry and paved roads and highways - an ode to Michigan's industrial strength.

The design with its cross also resembles the heraldry one would find on a coat of arms or shield, and looks defensive in appearance and styling. Thus, the design could be considered a visual display of Michigan's motto, "Tuebor," or "Defend."

Optional elements such as antlers or a star could be included for further symbolism - representing us as a state in the Union, while a shield could further symbolize “Tuebor” or “Defend," again echoing our state motto. These are added as charges at the center of the flag.

Michigan is home to more than 10 million people, all of whom deserve a flag that resonates with their love for their home state. A redesigned flag would not only instill pride among residents but also make it recognizable throughout America.
