The Issue

Redesign the Flag of Santa Clarita

Santa Clarita is one of California’s largest cities, yet its current flag is difficult to recognize from a distance and relies heavily on a detailed city seal. While the city seal is an important symbol, it does not function well as a modern civic flag.

Many cities across the United States have adopted simple, memorable flags that residents can easily recognize and proudly display. Cities such as Chicago, Denver, Phoenix, and Portland have shown how a strong flag can become a symbol of local identity and community pride.

Santa Clarita deserves a flag that reflects the character of the Santa Clarita Valley.

The proposed design features:

An oak tree representing the valley’s heritage and natural landscape.

Golden hills representing the rolling hills that define Santa Clarita throughout much of the year.

A winding river representing the Santa Clara River, one of the city’s most important natural features.

A simple and memorable color scheme inspired by the local landscape.

Rather than immediately replacing the current flag, the City of Santa Clarita should consider creating a public flag redesign process or community design contest to explore modern alternatives and allow residents to participate.

A city deserves a flag that residents can recognize, remember, and proudly fly.

Sign this petition to encourage Santa Clarita to explore a new civic flag for the future.

Many cities across the United States have adopted simple, memorable flags that residents can easily recognize and proudly display. Cities such as Chicago, Denver, Phoenix, and Portland have shown how a strong and recognizable flag can foster civic pride and unity among its residents. A well-designed flag can become a powerful symbol of a city's identity and culture, something that residents can rally around and proudly showcase to the world.

The current flag, dominated by the intricate city seal, is overly detailed for a flag design. It lacks the simplicity and boldness that allow flags to be seen, recognized, and remembered. A reimagined flag could infuse elements that are distinct to Santa Clarita, capturing the essence of our vibrant community.

Designing a new flag for Santa Clarita presents a unique opportunity for artists and residents in the community to engage in a creative process that reflects our shared heritage and values. The redesign can incorporate iconic elements such as the oak trees, golden hills, and the Santa Clara River, offering a fresh and inspiring vision of Santa Clarita’s future.

By signing this petition, we urge the Santa Clarita City Council to initiate an open and inclusive redesign process for a new city flag that truly embodies the spirit of our community. Let us create a flag that makes Santa Clarita stand out for its beauty and distinct character. Please sign this petition to support the call for a new flag that we can all be proud of.
