This redesigned flag draws on Santa Fe’s deep cultural roots and its historic role as the Crossroads of the Southwest. The central cross form represents Santa Fe as a meeting point of peoples, trade routes, cultures, and histories—Indigenous, Spanish, Mexican, and American—converging in one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities in the United States.

The interlocking border motif is inspired by Pueblo basket-weaving patterns, honoring the enduring presence and influence of the region’s Indigenous communities. Rather than copying a specific design, the pattern abstractly evokes Pueblo craftsmanship, continuity, and interconnectedness—values central to Santa Fe’s identity.
