The Issue

As a former public school teacher with a decade of experience in New York State, I understand the profound impact that a supportive educational environment can have on a child's development. Having been born and raised in Honeoye, and now homeschooling my daughter to better cater to her individual needs, I deeply desire to bridge the gap between public school children and homeschool children. Our community thrives when diversity in educational pathways is embraced and supported.

The Honeoye Central School District's current homeschool policy unfortunately restricts homeschooled children from participating in non-credit, afterschool activities and events. These activities are crucial for social development, enhancing learning experiences beyond textbooks, and fostering a sense of inclusion and community engagement. Participation in events such as sports, arts, and clubs can significantly enrich a child's learning journey, offering valuable opportunities to interact with peers, develop teamwork skills, and explore personal interests in a nurturing environment.

Statistics reveal that homeschooled students can benefit immensely from participating in extracurricular activities. A study conducted by the National Center for Education Statistics indicated that 56% of homeschoolers participate in at least one organized activity outside their home, compared to 88% of public school students. This gap highlights the importance of making supportive changes at the district level to ensure equitable access to extracurricular opportunities for all students.

We call upon the Honeoye Central School District to work collaboratively with homeschool families to redesign their homeschool policy. This can be achieved by forming a task force comprising educators, parents, board members and administrators to evaluate and implement strategies for inclusive participation. Possible solutions include granting access to extracurricular programs and events, creating mixed participation opportunities, and opening lines of communication between homeschool families and school staff to address any concerns or logistical challenges for spaces, equipment rentals, materials, and general support.

Redesigning the homeschool policy will not only benefit homeschooled children but also enrich the entire Honeoye community by fostering a diverse and unified educational environment. Together, we can create an inclusive community where all children have the opportunity to grow and thrive. I invite you to join me in advocating for positive change by signing this petition. Let's work towards a more inclusive future for all students in our beloved Honeoye.
