The Issue

During a communication class, I was tasked with writing a persuasive speech. I chose a topic that has long bothered me: the tax-exempt status of Scientology. Despite its controversial practices, Scientology benefits from non-profit organization tax exemptions. This status not only protects its operations but also potentially legitimizes actions that many believe are harmful to individuals and communities.

Religion plays an important role in society, offering support, community, guidance, and a moral compass. Yet, the privileges afforded to genuine religious organizations should not be exploited by groups whose interests may not align with these values. Currently, the IRS grants tax-exempt status based on several criteria, yet the ambiguity in defining what constitutes a religion allows for potential exploitation.

The Church of Scientology, founded by L. Ron Hubbard in the early 1950s, has been a subject of numerous controversies. Reports of abuse, financial exploitation, and manipulation have surfaced over the years, raising questions about its legitimacy as a religion designed for the public good. The lack of transparency and accountability further exacerbate concerns.

It's crucial for Congress to reassess the criteria used to determine religious tax exemptions. Legislative reform could clarify what truly qualifies as a religion under federal tax law, preventing organizations from taking undue advantage of these tax benefits. This reform would ensure that only groups fostering genuine social and moral value gain such benefits.

I urge Congress to take immediate action in redefining the parameters of what qualifies as a religion for tax-exempt status. A reevaluation will not only ensure a fairer system but also protect vulnerable populations from potential misuse of power by organizations hiding behind religious status.

Please sign this petition to encourage Congress to take a stand for transparency, accountability, and justice. Your support can lead to tangible changes in federal tax legislation and protect communities from harm.
