Meerathambi, aged 34, a young native of Kayalpattinam, Thoothukudi District, boarded the SRM Transport's bus on the night of August 26th. He had booked his Tiruchendur to Chennai (650 km journey) ticket on redBus.in,
As the bus began its journey at 10:30 pm on that night, a couple of drunken people waved their hands, stopped the bus and requested the bus' driver and conductor to board them till Thoothukudi, 35 kilometers away.
In their greed, the bus' driver and conductor - took 50 rupees each as per media reports - and allowed the two to board the bus and seated them next to Meerathambi.
After a short distance, one of the drunken persons vomited on Meerathambi leading to a quarrel. As the bus stopped in Thoothukudi for fuel and boarding more passengers, the two drunken persons alighted.
Meerathambi went to the toilet, shadowed by the two drunken persons. As Meerathambi came out of the toilet, he was stabbed more than a dozen times by the two drunken men - who escaped into the darkness of the night. Meerathambi died shortly of his wounds. He is survived by a young wife and 3 year old daughter.
The greed and poor safety procedures of SRM Transports are the primary reason for the death of Meerathambi. This could happen to anyone of the hundreds of people who travel by bus every day.
The family of Meerathambi has lost its breadwinner. Though no money can bring back the lost loved one, the SRM Transports must pay adequate compensation to the dead passenger's family and put in place strict safety measures. Until then, redBus.in must drop SRM Transports from its listings.
