Since 1996, I, alongside many others, have lived along 94th Avenue in Alachua County, enduring hazardous conditions that put drivers, pedestrians, and cyclists at risk every day. The lack of maintenance in over 30 years has resulted in countless potholes, a significantly worn surface, and inadequate width for today's traffic demands. Full-size trucks and trailers often impose a threat as they speed at over 55mph, either veering off the road due to oncoming traffic or occupying the center of the road when it's clear.

Adding to the imminent danger is the absolute disregard for cyclists and pedestrians. Absence of proper bike lanes forces them off the road whenever these heavy vehicles approach at dangerous speeds. The current state of 94th Avenue is forcing Alachua County residents to endure unnecessary perils on a route that is intended to ensure their safe transit.

It is of utmost urgency that Alachua County authorities oversee the repavement and widening of the 94th Avenue. Concurrently, the creation of dedicated bike lanes would significantly reduce risks for pedestrians and cyclists. We are not asking for luxury— only the basic rights to safe roads in our own neighborhood. To ignore this plea is to undermine the safety and well-being of Alachua County citizens.
