The Issue

To: West Allis-West Milwaukee School District Administration and School Board

We, the undersigned students, parents, staff, and community members, are asking the West Allis-West Milwaukee School District to reconsider its current restrictions on student backpacks and work toward a policy that better balances school safety, student needs, and practicality.

Why this matters

Students carry materials to and from school every day, including textbooks, notebooks, folders, athletic equipment, personal items, and other school supplies. Backpack restrictions can make it more difficult for students to transport what they need throughout the school day.

We understand that schools have legitimate concerns about safety, security, and keeping hallways and classrooms organized. Those concerns should be taken seriously. However, we believe there should be a reasonable solution that addresses those concerns without creating unnecessary difficulties for students.

What we’re asking for

We are asking WAWM district leadership to:

Review the current backpack policy and the reasoning behind it.
Consider student and parent feedback before making or maintaining restrictions.
Evaluate whether the current policy is the most practical and effective approach.
Consider reasonable alternatives that address safety and congestion concerns while still allowing students to carry necessary school materials.
Clearly communicate the authority, justification, and purpose behind the policy to students and families.
Student voices should matter

This petition is part of a broader effort to gather student feedback about the policy. Our survey has already received significant participation from students.

The goal is not to attack teachers, administrators, or the school district. The goal is to make sure students have a meaningful opportunity to express their concerns and that district decision-makers consider that feedback when evaluating school policies.

We believe students can be part of constructive policy discussions. Listening to students does not mean automatically agreeing with them—it means giving them an opportunity to be heard.

Our request

We respectfully ask the West Allis-West Milwaukee School District to review the backpack policy, publicly explain the reasoning behind it, and consider changes that provide a better balance between safety, organization, and students’ everyday needs.

If you agree that students and families deserve a voice in this decision, please sign this petition and share it with others in the WAWM community.

A petition cannot guarantee that a policy will change, but it can demonstrate that members of the community care enough to ask district leadership to take another look.
