Reconsider the roundabout project in Elizabeth City, NC
The Issue
I, along with many other citizens of Elizabeth City, NC, am deeply concerned about the proposed roundabout project at the intersection of Main Street and Hughes Boulevard. This project, backed by the North Carolina Department of Transportation (NCDOT), is set to significantly impact our businesses, homes, and daily lives.
Roundabouts aim to improve traffic flow and safety, but in our community, they may lead to confusion, leading to increased accidents. The proposed roundabout would not only fail to address these issues but would also displace local businesses and residents, affecting the economic and social fabric of Elizabeth City. This is why we are asking our city officials and NCDOT to explore alternative solutions that won't disrupt our lives or endanger our beloved community.
Instead of a roundabout, why not consider enhanced traffic signals, improved road signage, or even a broader community consultation to gather input from those most affected? Elizabeth City prides itself on its strong sense of community—it's time our concerns and voices are part of the decision-making process.
The project has already prompted worry among locals. Businesses located at the proposed site are particularly vulnerable, facing relocation or closure. This, in turn, could lead to a loss of jobs and a decrease in local economic activity. Our town can't afford such a risk, especially when viable alternatives exist.
We urge Elizabeth City officials and NCDOT to prioritize a sustainable, citizen-focused approach and invite dialogue with the community to find a more suitable solution. Our appeal aligns with the city’s plans by supporting environmental and economic wellbeing while preserving our local heritage and livelihoods.
