Reconsider the New Sablay Design for Aklan State University Graduating Students

The Issue

As a concerned student leader of Aklan State University, I have been approached by many of my peers alarmed and unsatisfied with the new design of the Sablay that will be used for our cherished graduation ceremony. Our Sablay embodies a significant rite of passage, a symbol of our university, and an emblem of our hard work, dedication, and memories we leave behind as graduates. Having a design that truly reflects us is crucial.

This sentiment seems to be shared by a significant number of graduating students who feel the design was imposed without the opportunity to share their feedback or contribute to the decision making process. With such an important tradition at stake, it is pivotal that the voices of those wearing these Sablays are heard. We can look to the example of the University of the Philippines, where the iconic “UP Sablay” design was developed through meaningful consultation with faculty, alumni, and cultural experts to reflect Filipino heritage and the values of the institution. Such inclusive approaches ensure that traditions like academic attire become symbols of unity, identity, and pride — not contention

This petition seeks not only to reconsider the design of the Sablay, but also to implement a more collaborative process where students can be involved in the decisions that shape their college experience and traditions. We urge the university administration to consider this viewpoint and involve the students in the decision-making process.

Let's make our voices heard. Please sign and share this petition.
