Reconsider the Graduation Date at DSBN

Reconsider the Graduation Date at DSBN
The Issue
As a student who has invested significant time and effort into my high school education, I feel disheartened by the recent changes to the graduation ceremony made by the District School Board of Niagara (DSBN). These changes not only advance our graduation date and make us attend school the next day/write exams as normal, but it will not allow students to receive their hard-earned diplomas and physical awards at this event. This decision, while inclusive, undermines the hard work of those of us striving for academic excellence.
I am not alone in this sentiment. Many other students share my disappointment, as we were looking forward to receiving awards, medals, and diplomas that symbolize our dedication and commitment throughout our high school journey. For some of us, these recognitions hold great significance as they represent milestones that we have worked tirelessly towards achieving.
The lack of a Grade 8 graduation was a personal setback for me and many others. We saw high school as an opportunity to rectify this missed milestone with diligent work towards academic recognition at graduation. The recent changes threaten to rob us once again of this much-anticipated moment.
Having graduation during the school week means returning to the usual school schedule the following day. This means exams would still be happening at the end of the year, requiring you to still go to school.
We understand that inclusivity is important, however it should not come at the expense of those who have worked diligently towards their goals. We urge DSBN to reconsider its decision regarding advancing the ceremony date and allowing students to receive the awards they deserve.
Please support us in advocating for a change in the graduation date from June 11th to after exams. When there are enough signatures, I will take this petition to the principal or higher school board.
