The Issue

My mom is in a care facility battling end-stage dementia. It's a heart-wrenching journey, but there is solace in knowing that she is receiving the highest standard of care from dedicated and compassionate foreign care aides. These wonderful individuals provide the personal care and attention that my mom deserves, despite facing their own challenges far away from their homeland.

Our healthcare system, especially when it comes to residential care aides, heavily relies on the contributions of foreign workers. In Canada, and particularly in British Columbia, there is a significant shortage of healthcare workers, including care aides. As evident from reports by the Canadian Institute for Health Information, the demand for long-term care staff continues to rise with our aging population.

The Government of Canada has facilitated the employment of foreign workers, enabling them to fill crucial gaps in our healthcare system. However, recent discussions concerning the potential discontinuation of this program threaten to dismantle the support system that countless families depend on.

Without foreign workers, many long-term care facilities will struggle to maintain the quality of care necessary for residents, potentially putting vulnerable individuals, like my mom, at risk. Based on the statistics provided by Health Canada, the vacancies for care aides remain high, and without additional support, the pressure on existing staff can lead to burnout and turnover.

Reconsidering the continuation of the foreign workers program for healthcare workers, especially residential care aides, is not just an act of kindness but a critical necessity for our healthcare system's sustainability. We ask the Canadian Government to fully appreciate the value that these dedicated workers bring to our communities and to secure the ongoing support that families across Canada desperately need.

Sign this petition to urge the Canadian government to continue the foreign workers program and ensure that these essential healthcare roles are filled by those willing and able to provide quality care. Together, we can advocate for both the caregivers and the cared-for, crafting a healthier future for everyone in our communities.
