The Issue

For me, the Alabaster YMCA has been more than just a facility; it's been a lifeline. I swim there 3-4 days a week, which has been a crucial part of my health and fitness journey. It's not just about the laps; it's about the connections, the friendships, and the community spirit cultivated within those walls. Importantly, the pool serves as a gathering place for senior citizens, providing much-needed social interaction and physical activity opportunities.

The decision to close the Alabaster YMCA comes as a crushing blow to many in the Birmingham area. This facility has been a beacon of fellowship, family unity, and community support for many years. It has provided a safe space where children attended summer camps and community members worked and socialized. This is the place where my son worked as a lifeguard after having grown up attending camps there himself. It's hard to accept that all of this could disappear.

The alarming part is that despite the full awareness of the need for maintenance and the ongoing pleas from the community to address wear and tear, no substantial efforts were made to preserve the facility. Now, we are told there's no budget for repairs, but where is the funding going, especially when membership rates have increased? This question remains unanswered.

Closing the Alabaster YMCA would deprive our community of a critical resource. With no other lap pools available in Alabaster, many people depend on this facility not only for exercise but also for social connection and community engagement. It provides vital child care services, and its closure would leave a significant void.

We urge the Birmingham Chapter to reconsider their decision to close the Alabaster YMCA. Explore alternative funding solutions, partnerships, or community involvement opportunities to keep this essential facility open. Our community deserves the chance to continue benefiting from all that the Alabaster YMCA offers.

Please sign this petition to show your support for saving the Alabaster YMCA. It's not just about a building; it's about preserving a community hub that serves as a lifeline for so many. Your voice can make a difference.
