Harry Potter fans were promised that the upcoming HBO Max series would stay faithful to the original books by J.K. Rowling. However, the casting of Pappa Essiedu as Severus Snape contradicts the character’s original description and deviates from the image that has lived in the minds of readers for over two decades.

This petition is not about the actor’s talent, but about staying true to the source material, which was a core promise of this reboot. Snape is described as having sallow skin, greasy black hair, a hooked nose, and a dark, brooding presence — characteristics that do not align with the energy or appearance of Pappa Essiedu.

Many fans agree that actors like Adam Driver (among others) embody the essence of Snape much more accurately — not just in physical traits, but in the mysterious, intense presence required to portray such a complex character.

If this series is truly meant to honor the books, the casting should reflect that.
