Reconsider Public Funding for the Proposed Queen Elizabeth II Memorial

Reconsider Public Funding for the Proposed Queen Elizabeth II Memorial
The Issue
We call on the UK Government to reconsider the allocation of public funds toward the proposed Queen Elizabeth II national memorial and to pause the project until economic conditions improve and essential public services are adequately supported.
While many people hold deep respect and affection for Queen Elizabeth II and recognise her historic contribution to the nation, the current economic climate makes significant public expenditure on a large-scale memorial difficult to justify.
The United Kingdom continues to face serious cost-of-living pressures. Many households are struggling with rising housing costs, food prices, and energy bills, while public services such as healthcare, social care, and local government remain under considerable strain.
At a time when many citizens are being asked to make financial sacrifices, it is reasonable to question whether tens of millions of pounds of taxpayer money should be committed to a commemorative project, however well intentioned.
We believe that national respect for Queen Elizabeth II can be expressed in ways that are meaningful and dignified without requiring substantial public expenditure during a period of economic hardship.
We therefore ask the Government to:
• Pause the memorial project
• Review the scale and cost of the proposed plans
• Consider lower-cost alternatives
• Ensure that public spending priorities reflect the immediate needs of citizens
At a time when financial support is being reduced or restricted in areas such as winter fuel payments for pensioners, local authority services, and other cost-of-living support measures, allocating approximately £45 million of taxpayer money to a memorial project appears deeply inappropriate.
Many citizens will understandably view such spending as inconsistent with the financial sacrifices currently expected of ordinary households. Public funds should be directed first toward essential support and services before being committed to large-scale symbolic projects.
This petition does not seek to diminish the legacy of Queen Elizabeth II. Rather, it calls for responsible and proportionate use of public money during a period of economic pressure on millions of UK residents.
