Reconsider Proposed Parking Charges in Sutton Park
Reconsider Proposed Parking Charges in Sutton Park
The Issue
I am a resident of Sutton Coldfield and Sutton Park is one of the few places where I can walk my dog while using my mobility scooter. The proposed parking charges in the park are not only a personal concern but also pose a threat to the wellbeing of all residents of our town. This land was generously gifted to us by King Henry VIII in 1528, with no charge for its use implied or stated. The introduction of these charges would be an affront to this historical gift.
Sutton Park is not just a park; it's our community's lifeline, providing physical and mental health benefits through access to nature and outdoor activities. It is estimated that green spaces save the UK health service an estimated £111 million per year (source: Fields In Trust), demonstrating their importance in maintaining public health.
The proposed parking charges could limit access for many residents, particularly those on lower incomes or with mobility issues like myself, which contradicts the original intention behind King Henry VIII's generous gift.
We urge our local council to reconsider these proposed parking charges and uphold our right as residents of Sutton Coldfield to freely enjoy this precious green space that has been part of our heritage for almost 500 years. Please sign this petition if you believe in preserving free access to Sutton Park for current and future generations.
