Reconsider Nursing Rule at Our College Located in Milton Massachusetts

Reconsider Nursing Rule at Our College Located in Milton Massachusetts
The Issue
I know a nursing student at CC, and I am deeply concerned about the new rule that requires us to achieve a weighted average of 80% on all quizzes and exams in order for additional course assignments to count towards our final grade. This rule was implemented without any input from nursing students and was sprung upon us on the first day of classes. It completely contradicts our initial understanding when we applied and committed to this program.
Personally, this rule has had a significant impact on my academic journey. Like many other nursing students, I have always been passionate about caring for others and making a difference in people's lives through healthcare. However, this sudden change in grading policy has created immense stress and anxiety among us. When we became nursing students at CC, the expectation was an 80% overall average in nursing classes, if they were to implement a change in the grading system it should only apply to new students, not current students.
The weight placed solely on quizzes and exams fails to consider the diverse learning styles of nursing students. Some of us excel in hands-on clinical experiences or through projects/presentations that allow us to showcase our practical skills and critical thinking abilities. By disregarding these alternative assessments, the new rule undermines our ability to demonstrate comprehensive knowledge in different ways.
Moreover, it is crucial to question the legality of this abrupt change in policy without proper consultation with those directly affected by it – the nursing students themselves. As stakeholders invested in our education, we deserve transparency and inclusion when decisions are made that significantly impact our academic progress.
To support my concerns regarding this unfair nursing rule at CC, I would like to present some relevant facts:
1) According to research conducted by educational psychologist Dr. John Hattie (source: Visible Learning), traditional testing methods such as quizzes and exams may not accurately measure true understanding or long-term retention of knowledge.
2) A study published by The Journal of Nursing Education (source: JNE) highlights how alternative assessments can effectively evaluate critical thinking skills necessary for successful nursing practice.
3) The American Association of Colleges of Nursing (AACN) emphasizes the importance of using multiple assessment strategies to evaluate nursing students' competence and readiness for professional practice (source: AACN).
Considering these facts, it is evident that the new nursing rule at CC fails to align with best practices in nursing education. It not only undermines our potential as future healthcare professionals but also disregards our individual strengths and abilities.
Therefore, I urge CC administration to reconsider this unfair nursing rule and engage in meaningful dialogue with nursing students. Let us work together to develop a grading policy that values diverse learning styles, promotes comprehensive assessment methods, and ensures fairness for all aspiring nurses.
By signing this petition, we stand united in advocating for a reconsideration of the new nursing rule at CC. Together, let us strive towards an educational environment that fosters growth, inclusivity, and excellence in nursing education.
Thank you for your attention and support.
