Reconsider HDC property transfer and sales fees

When the legal tenant or owner of a property passes away, their beneficiaries should not be burdened with exorbitant costs just to transfer ownership. Take for instance a property valued at $500,000. A 5% transfer fee would result in a $25,000 charge—an overwhelming amount for many inheriting citizens. This form of what feels like an inheritance tax runs contrary to one of HDC's core missions: to provide affordable housing. These fees essentially penalize families dealing with grief by adding a financial burden that feels like a direct attack on their right to property ownership.

The housing sector should support, not hinder, individuals trying to secure stable living conditions for their families. Many beneficiaries are already struggling with everyday expenses, and the added financial pressure could force them to sell their inherited properties just to cover the fees, undermining the very notion of security through homeownership.

I urge the HDC to reconsider these fees. Reducing or eliminating them would align with the organization's values and goals, and support the many families who rely on the promise of affordable housing.
