The Issue

America has always been shaped by people who came here in search of a better life. For generations, immigrants from every corner of the world have sought safety, freedom, opportunity, or simply the chance to build a brighter future for their families. Many arrived with little more than hope. Through hard work, resilience, and determination, they have opened businesses, paid taxes, served in our military, cared for our sick, educated our children, built our cities, strengthened our economy, and become proud members of the communities they now call home.

Yet today, too many immigrants are reduced to stereotypes instead of being recognized for their humanity and the countless contributions they make to our communities every day.

As a Bosnian immigrant, this issue is deeply personal to me.

My family survived war and rebuilt our lives in the United States. Like thousands of Bosnian families who found refuge in cities such as St. Louis, and like millions of immigrants and refugees from around the world, we came seeking safety, peace, freedom, and the opportunity to rebuild our lives with dignity.

Today, St. Louis is home to one of the largest Bosnian communities outside of Bosnia and Herzegovina. Bosnians have become physicians, nurses, teachers, engineers, first responders, business owners, construction workers, truck drivers, artists, caregivers, entrepreneurs, scientists, veterans, and public servants. We have created jobs, strengthened neighborhoods, preserved our culture, volunteered in our communities, paid taxes, and proudly given back to the country that gave us a second chance.

But our story is only one of millions.

Families from Bosnia and Herzegovina, Croatia, Mexico, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Venezuela, Haiti, Syria, Ukraine, Afghanistan, Sudan, Vietnam, India, Nigeria, Ethiopia, the Philippines, and countless other nations all share something in common: they came searching for safety, opportunity, hope, and the chance to build a better future for themselves and their children.

Every immigrant community has its own history, traditions, and challenges, but many share the same dream—to work honestly, raise a family, contribute to society, and leave a better future for the next generation.

Every immigrant community has also experienced moments of misunderstanding, prejudice, or harmful stereotypes. While every story is different, no person should be judged by assumptions instead of their character, their work, or the life they have built. Recognition begins with seeing people as individuals—not labels.

Immigrants are not statistics.

They are not stereotypes.

They are our neighbors.

They are our coworkers.

They are our classmates.

They are healthcare workers, military members, teachers, first responders, caregivers, entrepreneurs, students, artists, scientists, volunteers, and friends.

People may have different opinions about immigration policy, and respectful discussions about policy are important in any democracy. But regardless of political beliefs, every human being deserves to be treated with dignity and respect.

No one should be dehumanized because of where they were born.

This petition is not about politics.

It is about humanity.

What We Are Asking For

We call upon elected officials, educators, employers, community organizations, media organizations, and every American to help build a culture that recognizes immigrants not through stereotypes, but through their humanity and contributions.

We ask our communities to:

  • Recognize the countless contributions immigrants make every day.
  • Reject harmful stereotypes and language that dehumanizes immigrant communities.
  • Promote conversations rooted in truth, compassion, dignity, and respect.
  • Celebrate the cultural, economic, educational, scientific, medical, civic, and military contributions immigrants have made to the United States.
  • Encourage schools and communities to teach about the diverse histories and contributions of immigrant communities, including refugee populations such as Bosnian Americans.
  • Stand against discrimination based on national origin, ethnicity, religion, or immigration status.
Build stronger communities by recognizing that diversity and mutual respect strengthen our nation.

Why This Matters

History has repeatedly shown us what can happen when entire groups of people are reduced to labels instead of being seen as human beings.

No immigrant community should be judged by stereotypes when their lives, sacrifices, and contributions tell a much deeper story.
Recognition begins with seeing one another as people first.

America has never been strongest because everyone came from the same place.

America is strongest because people from different backgrounds, cultures, faiths, and experiences have come together to build something greater than themselves.

The Bosnian story reminds us that people who arrive seeking refuge can become community leaders, healthcare workers, entrepreneurs, educators, and proud Americans. The same is true for countless immigrant communities throughout our nation's history.

Their stories deserve to be remembered—not reduced to stereotypes.

Our Message

This petition is for every immigrant who has ever been told they did not belong despite working hard, paying taxes, raising families, serving their communities, and proudly calling America home.

It is also for every American who believes dignity and respect should never depend on where someone was born.

Behind every accent is a story.

Behind every passport is a family.

Behind every immigration journey is a human being with hopes, dreams, talents, and a desire to contribute.

One day, history will remember how we chose to treat one another.

Let it remember that we chose dignity over division, truth over stereotypes, compassion over fear, and humanity over hate.

Together, we can build stronger communities by recognizing the people behind the labels and celebrating the countless ways immigrants continue to enrich our nation.

Because every person deserves to be seen first as a human being.
