Recognize Pot Belly Pigs as Pets, Not Livestock, in Rio Rancho, NM

The Issue

Our family recently relocated to Rio Rancho, New Mexico, and are finding ourselves in a struggle to protect a beloved member of our family - our 10-year old mini pig that we've had since she was 3 months old. She is shy, sweet, intelligent, enjoys sunbathing, belly rubs, and snacks. She is quieter than most dogs, not a menace to the community and stays within the bounds of our fully fenced yard. Yet, our cherished companion is unjustly classified as livestock due to outdated local regulations.

While the USDA correctly recognizes pot belly pigs as pets, our city does not. Pot belly pigs do not fall into the conventional definition of livestock; they neither produce goods nor perform labor. Their sole function is to provide companionship, just like a dog or a cat. They, too, are loved family members and should be recognized as such.

Let's correct this misrepresentation and bring Rio Rancho's classification of pot belly pigs in line with the USDA's. By doing so, we not only protect our mini pig, but also secure the rightful status for countless other beloved pets in our community. Additionally, we might set an example for other cities and advocate for change nationwide, as currently new cases emerge all over the US due to lack of federal legislation.

We implore the city officials of Rio Rancho to review the classification of pot belly pigs and recognize them as the pets they truly are, not the livestock they're wrongfully deemed to be. Compassion and understanding should be at the heart of our city's pet regulations.

Please join us in declaring that pot belly pigs are pets - not disposal commodities. Reframe your views, change outdated norms, embrace our inclusive, loving community. Stand with us by signing this petition.
