Recognize new media as traditional outlets by MHSA

Recognize new media as traditional outlets by MHSA
The Issue
For the past decade, I have committed myself to covering sports as an independent journalist, covering every level from high school to professional. After spending 2 years as a local sports reporter for television, I went back to being independent in 2024 and my sole focus shifted to high school and college sports throughout the state of Montana. My heart and soul have been poured into this passion with the support of amazing local sponsors, and I have been honored to serve as a credentialed media representative. Despite this longstanding dedication and professional track record, my requests for media credentials at state tournaments and championships have been consistently denied by the Montana High School Association (MHSA).
This hurdle extends beyond my personal experience; it’s a mounting issue affecting many independent journalists, podcast creators, and social media influencers who work tirelessly to provide real, often underrepresented perspectives on sports. These platforms are crucial, providing diversified viewpoints and comprehensive coverage that traditional outlets may overlook. Yet, the MHSA continues to view and treat these modern, relevant media sources as non-essential or secondary.
Independent media is transforming how sports are covered. It’s time for these platforms to be recognized as legitimate and credible media outlets deserving of the same access rights as their traditional counterparts. In the rapidly evolving media landscape, the MHSA must acknowledge and adapt to these changes to ensure fair coverage and representation at statewide events.
Imagine the vast array of stories, insights, and opportunities for wider coverage lost due to this outdated perspective. Acknowledging and accepting independent media verifies the value they bring to the community and acknowledges the myriad new avenues audiences have for engagement and information.
I urge the MHSA to update their media recognition criteria, ensuring they include independent and digital media. By doing so, we promote inclusivity and maintain a robust media presence that reflects a true and comprehensive view of our sports community.
Please support this call to action by signing the petition, advocating for fair recognition and access for all media professionals dedicated to promoting and reporting on high school sports in Montana. Every signature counts and can be the catalyst for a much-needed change in policy.
