Recognize Monmouth County as Central New Jersey

Recognize Monmouth County as Central New Jersey

The Issue

For years, residents of Monmouth County, including me, have claimed to be part of Central New Jersey, known colloquially as Central Jersey. Our county is a suburban haven from the denseness of North Jersey and the emptiness of South Jersey, with historical significance dating back to the Revolutionary War, a thriving collection of neighborhoods coming to life across the shore, and major business developments in the works. It is a disgrace that Gov. Murphy signed legislation including us in South Jersey, ignoring the identity we have claimed throughout our history.

Growing up in Monmouth County has been an incredible experience. From our beautiful beaches along the Atlantic Ocean to our charming towns nestled along rivers and bays, we have always felt connected to Central New Jersey's culture and way of life. We identify with their values and share similar interests.

Monmouth County plays a significant role in New Jersey's economy as well. According to data from the U.S. Bureau of Economic Analysis (BEA), Monmouth County had a Gross Domestic Product (GDP) of over $41 billion in 2021 alone. This places us among some of the most economically productive counties in New Jersey.

Furthermore, our county is home to several major corporations and businesses that contribute significantly to job creation and economic growth within not only Monmouth but also neighboring counties considered part of Central New Jersey. We're also proud to have so many attractions: the northernmost points of the relaxing Jersey Shore, among them Sandy Hook; legendary live music venues such as The Stone Pony; collections of parks including Allaire State Park; bustling main streets akin to Freehold Borough's; known agricultural names such as Holland Ridge Farms; and amusement parks, notwithstanding nearby Six Flags Great Adventure in the bordering Ocean County town, Jackson, NJ. Considering these incredible institutions and more, Monmouth County offers versatility in tourism and so many industries that are more like the rest of Central New Jersey than the South.

It is important for our identity as residents that we are recognized as part of Central New Jersey officially by state legislation. This recognition will allow us access to resources allocated for infrastructure development, education initiatives, healthcare improvements, tourism opportunities, and other essential services specific to this region.

By recognizing Monmouth County as part of Central New Jersey:

1) We will be able to better align ourselves with neighboring counties where we share common interests.
2) Our community will receive appropriate funding for public projects based on accurate regional categorization.
3) Businesses operating within our county can benefit from being recognized as part of a thriving economic hub.
4) Our residents will feel a stronger sense of belonging and pride in their regional identity.

It is time for our voices to be heard, and for the state government to acknowledge the truth about Monmouth County's rightful place within Central New Jersey. We urge Governor Murphy and the New Jersey Legislature to rectify this oversight by passing legislation that officially recognizes Monmouth County as part of Central New Jersey.

Together, let us stand united in reclaiming our identity and ensuring that future generations can proudly call Monmouth County their home within Central New Jersey. Sign this petition today to support our cause!
