The Issue

In the village of East Rockaway (and surrounding towns and villages), many families find joy and companionship in unconventional pets like mini pigs. These intelligent and affectionate animals bring love and happiness to their families, much like dogs or cats. However, the current classification of mini pigs as livestock rather than companion animals is causing distress and hardship for many responsible pet owners. We are calling upon the Mayor Fox and the East Rockaway Village Board to reassess this classification and recognize mini pigs as companion animals.

Mini pigs, also known as miniature pigs or teacup pigs, are smaller in size than traditional farm pigs and have been bred specifically for domestication. They have a lifespan of 12-20 years, and with proper care, they can thrive in homes and are well-suited to urban or suburban living. Numerous studies have shown that mini pigs are capable of forming strong emotional bonds with humans, demonstrating cognitive abilities comparable to various domesticated pets.

Currently, labeling mini pigs as livestock imposes unnecessary zoning restrictions and challenges for owners who are otherwise committed to providing safe and loving homes for these animals. This classification can often result in heartbreaking situations where families are forced to part with their beloved pets due to outdated ordinances. It is time for the village of East Rockaway to adopt more progressive animal classifications that reflect the changing dynamics of pet ownership.

Across the United States, many cities have adapted to include mini pigs in their companion animal policies. By following their lead, East Rockaway can align its policies with modern animal welfare standards and support its residents in making compassionate choices for their families.

Join us in urging the East Rockaway Village Board to reclassify mini pigs as companion animals. This change will not only support responsible pet ownership but also preserve the emotional bonds between families and their mini pigs. Sign the petition today to become a part of this important movement towards a more inclusive and understanding community.
