The Issue

Growing up, my daughter has always shown a profound love for music. Her dream of participating in band activities as a home-schooled student has been met with an unexpected barrier. In Trousdale, TN and surrounding counties, Marching Band and Color Guard are not recognized as a sport but merely a club, and this classification excludes her from participating under the Tennessee Secondary School Athletic Association (TSAA) regulations.

This classification greatly limits access and opportunities for homeschooled students who, although passionate and talented, are left on the sidelines unable to fully partake in what could be a meaningful and educational experience. By reclassifying Marching Band and Color Guard as a sport, the door would open to a myriad of opportunities for young musicians like my daughter, allowing them to develop their talents and participate inclusively alongside their peers. No laws means deliberate exclusions can be abused by those in power.

Beyond the personal story, there are significant benefits to considering Marching Band and Color Guard as a sport. Bands require rigorous practice schedules, physical endurance, teamwork, and competition—qualities that are analogous to traditional sports. Moreover, studies show that students involved in extracurricular activities like Marching Band and Color Guard tend to perform better academically and develop stronger social skills.

By recognizing band as a sport, Trousdale will be championing not only the talents of these young musicians but also enriching the local community by enhancing cultural participation and appreciation of the arts. Additionally, it will ensure that all students, regardless of schooling choices, have equal opportunities to engage in a holistic educational environment.

I am calling on the authorities in Tennessee, particularly the Trousdale County Board of Education and the TSAA as well as TMSAA, to reclassify Marching Band and Color Guard activities, allowing our children to pursue their passions equitably. Your signature can make a difference. Let's remove these barriers and give every student the chance to shine. Sign this petition now to advocate for change.
