Recognize Level 3 Health Care Assistants as Auxiliary Nurses with NMC PINs

The Issue

I am a Level 3 Health Care Assistant, and like many others in my position, I have dedicated countless hours to providing essential care for those who need it most. Despite our significant role in the healthcare system, we are not formally recognized with an appropriate job title or given a PIN with the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC).

Healthcare Assistants at Level 3 or above perform duties that are integral to patient care. We administer medication, assist with clinical duties, make assessments on someone’s current health to determine what action (sometimes life saving) we should take and provide personal care. Our responsibilities often mirror those of registered nurses yet we lack the formal recognition that comes with a professional title.

The UK has over 1.5 million Healthcare Assistants working tirelessly across various sectors - hospitals, clinics, home care services - providing vital support to registered nurses and doctors (source: Skills for Care report). It's time our contribution is acknowledged appropriately.

By granting us the title of Auxiliary Nurse and providing us an NMC PIN number, we can be officially recognized within the nursing profession. This will not only validate our work but also enhance our professional development opportunities. It will encourage people to choose a career in the care sector. This sector is in desperate need of support with recruitment.

Please sign this petition to urge policymakers to formally recognize all Health Care Assistants at Level 3 or above as Auxiliary Nurses by granting them an NMC PIN number. Your signature can make a difference in thousands of lives who serve on the front lines of healthcare every day.
