Recognize Indigenous Peoples’ Day at St. John’s University

The Issue

As an institution committed to fostering diversity, equity, and inclusion, St. John’s University has a responsibility to recognize and honor the histories and cultures of all peoples, including Indigenous communities. We propose that the university recognize the second Monday in October ("Columbus Day") as “Indigenous Peoples’ Day” to acknowledge and celebrate the history, culture, and contributions of Indigenous peoples in the Americas. This change would reflect St. John’s values of social justice, inclusivity, and respect for all communities.

Columbus Day, while traditionally celebrated as a day commemorating European exploration, is increasingly recognized as a complex and controversial part of history. The impact of European colonization on Indigenous populations included displacement, cultural erasure, and significant harm to these communities. Acknowledging Indigenous Peoples’ Day allows us to honor a more complete and truthful historical narrative.

Benefits for Students & St. John's University

  • Enhanced Cultural Awareness and Learning Opportunities
  • Promotion of Inclusivity and Belonging
  • Alignment with Diverse Student Values and Interests
  • Reinforcement of Core Values
  • Strengthening of the University’s Public Image
  • Enhanced Community Engagement and Partnerships
  • Increased Student and Alumni Pride
