Like many others, I am a flight attendant, serving as the first line of defense during flights. We are firefighters, medical support and security all in one and yet, we are not recognized as first responders.

Flight attendants are trained in firefighting, administer first aid and are responsible for evacuating an aircraft in an emergency. We deliver babies, perform CPR, and calm people in distress, often at 36,000 feet. Each flight is unpredictable, and each carries its unique set of challenges.

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, there are nearly 120,000 flight attendants in the U.S. alone, all of whom are required to carry out duties equivalent to trained first responders. The American Heart Association reported an incidence of 1 in 604 flights involve a medical emergency indicating that flight attendants frequently perform first responder duties.

It's high time our commitment and the risks we navigate every flight are recognized. We call for legislative amendment to officially designate flight attendants as first responders.
