Recognize FBA as a distinct race in the United States
The Issue
Growing up in Orangeburg, South Carolina, I always knew there was something unique about my heritage. I am a descendant of foundational Black Americans (FBA), the very people who toiled without reward, contributing to the prosperity of America long before it became the nation we know today. Despite the immense sacrifices and contributions, our stories are often overlooked. Our languages, religions, and even our identities were stripped away, leaving us to fight for humanity in a land our ancestors built with their bare hands.
The history of foundational Black Americans is intertwined with the fabric of this nation. It’s a history of perseverance and resilience—a testament to the strength and determination of a people who have faced unimaginable hardships, yet continue to thrive. From the plantations to the promise of what America could be, FBA individuals played an indispensable role in shaping this country. However, while former slave masters received reparations, the descendants of those who labored until their hands were bare were left without acknowledgment or compensation. This grave injustice needs addressing.
Today, we call on the powers that be to officially recognize foundational Black Americans as a distinct race. This recognition is not merely symbolic; it offers the respect and acknowledgment that our community has long been denied. It's about ensuring that our stories and contributions are etched into the history books for future generations to learn, appreciate, and acknowledge.
