Recognize Eid ul Fitr as a Student or District Wide Holiday in FBISD
The Issue
Close to 10% of FBISD students have to choose between celebrating an important religious holiday or continuing their learning by going to school on the day of Eid ul Fitr. When these students miss school to celebrate their holiday, they experience of a loss of learning since group projects and a full presentation by the teacher of the material being taught by the teacher cannot be recreated at a later date. There is also disruption to the learning process as teachers are forced to figure out a way to continue teaching while getting 10% of their students caught up on missed material. Neighboring school districts such as Aldine, HISD, and Round Rock ISD have taken the lead in honoring the diversity of their student bodies and minimizing the disruption to learning on this important day by making Eid ul Fitr a district wide holiday. FBISD should join the rank of leaders and do the same for its students. This will improve the learning process for all FBISD students while further fostering inclusion and diversity.
