We, the Parents of Niagara County Public Schools, strongly believe that Eid ul-Fitr and Eid ul-Adha should be recognized as official school holidays. Currently, Muslim students are only given excused absences for these important religious celebrations, but this does not fully acknowledge the significance of these days for our growing Muslim community. Why This Matters? Eid ul-Fitr and Eid ul-Adha are the two most important holidays in Islam, celebrated by millions of Muslims worldwide and right here in Niagara Falls. Eid ul-Fitr marks the end of Ramadan, a month of fasting, prayer, and self-discipline, while Eid ul-Adha commemorates faith, sacrifice, and unity. These are not just days of personal religious practice but days of gathering, prayer, and community celebration—just like Christmas and other major holidays that schools are already closed for. Muslim students should not have to choose between attending school and celebrating these meaningful days with their families and communities. Having an excused absence is not enough, because missing a day of school still means falling behind on work, tests, and assignments—something that students who celebrate other major holidays do not have to worry about.   The Growing Muslim Population in Niagara County Schools? Niagara’s Muslim community is larger than ever, and our schools reflect this diversity. Every year, more students, teachers, and families observe these holidays. New York City, one of the most diverse school districts in the country, already recognizes Eid ul-Fitr and Eid ul-Adha as official school holidays, setting an example that Niagara County should follow. Buffalo Public Schools also recognize Eid ul-Fitr as an official holiday and has the day off. As a district that values equity and inclusion, it is time for Niagara Public Schools to take this step and ensure that all students feel represented and respected.   What We Are Asking For? We are asking the Niagara Board of Education to officially add Eid ul-Fitr and Eid ul-Adha to the school calendar as days off, just like other religious and cultural holidays. This change will show real support for our district’s Muslim students and families, proving that Niagara Public Schools values all students equally.
