As a parent of two children who attend the West Hempstead School District, I am deeply committed to advocating for equality and inclusivity in our educational system. It is crucial that all religions are treated equally, and this includes recognizing important holidays, such as Eid, with the same respect and acknowledgment as Christian and Jewish holidays. By establishing school holidays for Eid, we can ensure that all students feel seen and respected, regardless of their faith.

Eid al-Fitr and Eid al-Adha are two of the most significant holidays for Muslims worldwide. In a diverse community like West Hempstead, where we embrace various cultures and religions, it is important that we acknowledge all religion in our community.

NYC and many Long Island schools have implemented Eid as a school holiday and will be closed.  Having Eid recognized as an official school holiday will ensure the Muslim students and staff  can fully participate in important religious and cultural practices without negative impact.
