Recognize Eid as a school holiday in Jackson Township

Recognize Eid as a school holiday in Jackson Township
The Issue
My name is Fares Musa, and I am a Muslim student at Jackson Township School District in Ocean County, New Jersey. Each year, my family faces the difficult decision between observing our sacred religious holidays of Eid al-Fitr and Eid al-Adha or attending school to keep up with our academic responsibilities. These joyous occasions are meant for prayers, communal gatherings, and cherished moments with family—paralleling the significance of holidays like Christmas and Easter, which are included in our school calendar.
For Muslim students like myself, missing school during Eid means falling behind academically and experiencing undue stress during what should be a time of religious reverence and joy. This is why I advocate for the inclusion of Eid al-Fitr and Eid al-Adha in the official school holiday calendar. It is essential for creating an inclusive environment that respects and honors the diversity of our student body's religious backgrounds.
Statistics from Pew Research indicate that Islam is the third-largest religion in the United States, which only underscores the significance of accommodating the religious practices of its followers. New York City public schools have taken progressive steps by recognizing Eid holidays, and it sets a commendable precedent for other districts to follow.
Recognizing Muslim holidays affirms our district's commitment to diversity, equality, and respect for all cultural and religious practices. It sends a powerful message that our schools are inclusive and supportive of every student’s background and beliefs.
By acknowledging Eid as a holiday, we ensure that Muslim students can celebrate their religious obligations without negative academic consequences. It fosters a sense of belonging and unity within our community, showing that our educational system values diversity beyond mere tolerance.
Please join me in urging the Jackson Township School District to officially recognize Eid al-Fitr and Eid al-Adha as school holidays. Your support can help promote a more inclusive and respectful educational environment for all students. Sign this petition today to make a change for future generations.
