Recognize Diwali 🪔 as a School Holiday at FRSD and HCRHS!
The Issue
Diwali, the Indian Festival of Lights, holds immense cultural and spiritual significance for millions across the world. Here in Flemington, NJ, our community celebrates this vibrant festival with great enthusiasm. Yet, many families, including mine, find it difficult to fully engage in the festivities due to school commitments and homework. Our children attend school just like on any other day, and the lack of acknowledgment for Diwali as a school holiday significantly impacts their ability to celebrate with community and family.
This petition calls for Diwali to be recognized as an official school holiday by our local school boards (FRSD and HCRHS), similar to the recognition already given to Christmas, Yom Kippur, and Rosh Hashanah. This would not only show support to a growing segment of our community but also promote cultural diversity and inclusivity.
The opportunity for including Diwali as a school holiday has never been better. Nearby districts have already taken steps to acknowledge Diwali, reflecting the evolving nature of our multicultural society. Moreover, our school board is in the process of drafting the academic calendar for the upcoming school year - presenting a timely window to advocate for this important change.
According to the Pew Research Center, the Indian-American population in the U.S. has grown significantly over the past decade, contributing to various sectors, from technology to politics, and reinforcing their cultural practices. In Flemington, NJ, a noticeable number of families celebrate Diwali, making it imperative for our educational institutions to reflect this cultural diversity.
The recognition of Diwali as a school holiday would allow students and their families to participate in the celebrations without the burden of homework or the stress of missing school. It would offer them the opportunity to engage in religious practices, embrace cultural traditions, and strengthen community bonds.
Join me in urging the Flemington Raritan School District and Hunterdon Central Regional High School to recognize Diwali as a school holiday. By signing this petition, you're voicing support for an inclusive and diverse educational environment that we can all be proud of. Your support can make a significant difference, bringing us closer to a community where all cultures and traditions are respected and celebrated.
Sign this petition today to help make this change a reality for our children and our community.
