The Issue

For the past couple of years, I've been living with relentless headaches—rare at first, but gradually more frequent and excruciating. The pressure in my head would become unbearable, and my vision often turned blurry. However, it wasn't until a CT scan, performed to rule out other conditions, that I discovered I have Chiari Malformation Type 1. It was a moment of clarity: the symptoms I experienced were not isolated incidents but part of this rare condition.

Chiari Malformation is a debilitating neurological disorder where brain tissue extends into the spinal canal, causing severe pain and affecting both physical and mental health. Many, like myself, go undiagnosed for years, suffering in silence because our symptoms are often misattributed to other issues. Support groups, largely from the UK and US, have been a crucial lifeline, offering a platform to share experiences and finally be understood.

Despite its significant impact, Chiari Malformation is not recognized as a disability in Ireland, leaving sufferers without the support they desperately need. This lack of recognition means missed opportunities for necessary accommodations, medical treatments, and financial aid.

There are numerous stories from fellow sufferers in Ireland whose symptoms have been ignored or wrongly diagnosed, leading to unnecessary suffering and additional stress. Recognizing Chiari Malformation as a disability would not only provide acknowledgment and support but also raise awareness within the medical community and the general public.

By signing this petition, you can help ensure that those living with Chiari Malformation in Ireland receive the recognition and support they need. Imagine the difference it would make if sufferers were met with understanding rather than skepticism.

Please join me in advocating for this vital change. Your signature can lead to the recognition of Chiari Malformation as a disability in Ireland, paving the way for better diagnosis, treatment, and quality of life for many. Thank you for your support.
