For over two decades, I have wrestled with the debilitating symptoms of Chiari Malformation. It wasn't until November 2024 that I finally received a formal diagnosis. But this diagnosis, rather than offering relief, introduced me to another struggle: proving my condition qualifies as a disability to the Social Security Administration (SSA). Despite the considerable limitations my illness imposes, and while dealing with an additional challenge of a thoracic aortic aneurysm, I have been denied disability benefits five times, even with legal representation. The common reason cited for rejection is my age.

My struggle is not unique. Countless individuals with Chiari Malformation have faced similar hurdles, adding financial instability to their health challenges. The lack of mainstream information and awareness about Chiari Malformation exacerbates the problem. Many in the medical community and the SSA still fail to fully understand the impact this condition can have on one's daily life.

Chiari Malformation is a serious neurological disorder where brain tissue extends into the spinal canal due to skull malformations. Symptoms can vary widely, including severe headaches, neck pain, balance disorders, muscle weakness, and a range of neurological difficulties that can be incapacitating. According to studies, an estimated 300,000 people in the United States might have Chiari Malformation, yet many go undiagnosed or misdiagnosed, leading to inadequate treatment and support.

The Social Security Administration's current guidelines do not universally recognize all types of Chiari Malformation as disabilities, leaving many, regardless of their age or the severity of their symptoms, without the necessary financial support. It is vital that the criteria for disability benefits be updated to reflect the reality of living with Chiari Malformation. This change would provide deserving individuals with the support they need to manage their symptoms and live their lives with dignity.

We urge the Social Security Administration to review and amend its criteria for disability benefits to include comprehensive recognition of Chiari Malformation, regardless of type or patient age. By increasing awareness and understanding, we can ensure that fewer people have to endure the exhausting and often humiliating process of repeatedly proving their disease's legitimacy.
