Recognize Cesar Chavez Day as a TUHSD Holiday

The Issue

Our school district is rich in diverse heritage. As a community primarily comprised of Latino students, our identity and culture are integral facets of our shared heritage. As a student-led club advocating for the celebration of our Latin identity within the school, initiating this petition was dear to our hearts.

We believe that one way of expressing appreciation and recognition for our culture is through the formal recognition of Cesar Chavez Day as a school district holiday, granting the day off to students. Cesar Chavez was a powerful figure who worked tirelessly to improve conditions for farm workers, many of whom were Latinos. His efforts significantly improved lives for many in the farm worker community and created a lasting impact on labor rights in America. Instituting a holiday in his honor, in a substantial Latino district such as ours, can promote awareness about our vibrant culture and history.

Currently, the City of Tempe and Phoenix Union High School District grant this holiday to their respective staff and students. Let us honor Chavez's legacy with tangible recognition by declaring Cesar Chavez Day a formal holiday in our district. This designation would provide an avenue for our students to better understand and appreciate their cultural and historical roots, instilling a greater sense of belonging and identity.

We call upon our school district to grant this recognition. Please sign this petition to demonstrate your support for recognizing and celebrating our Latino heritage and furthering inclusivity within our school district.
