Recognize auDHD as an official medical diagnosis

Recognize auDHD as an official medical diagnosis
The Issue
In 2014, I was diagnosed with auDHD, a condition that combines symptoms of both autism and ADHD. At the time, there was little information available about it. In May of 2025, as I started unmasking my auDHD traits, my family felt alarmed and took me to the hospital. The next day, I had to call 911 hoping they would help my family understand autism. However, I didn’t realize my family had already arranged for someone to talk to me, and, unfortunately, my behaviors related to auDHD were misunderstood. This resulted in me receiving a pink slip and a misdiagnosis of bipolar disorder at the hospital.
My experience is not unique, and this is just one example of the broader issue: the lack of formal recognition and understanding of auDHD, leading to confusing, incorrect diagnoses, and ineffective treatment plans. For many, the distinction between auDHD and other mental health conditions like bipolar disorder is crucial. The absence of an official diagnostic framework for auDHD results in many individuals struggling without appropriate support and compassion they truly need.
Research into auDHD, its symptoms, and effects must be expanded. This includes understanding auDHD burnout and developing a reliable diagnostic system to distinguish it from other conditions. Such steps are essential in aiding healthcare professionals to provide better care and support for those with auDHD.
Additionally, increasing awareness and education around auDHD for medical providers, mental health professionals, and the general public is vital. A thorough understanding of auDHD will not only reduce misdiagnosis but will also ensure that individuals receive the respect, care, and accommodation they deserve.
Join me in advocating for the recognition of auDHD as a formal diagnosis. Let’s push for comprehensive research and education to ensure the individuals with auDHD get the support they need. Please sign this petition to make change happen.
