The Issue

In October 1974 during my service in Northern Ireland, I experienced a life-changing event. Alongside my platoon officer in North Bomb Ireland, I witnessed an explosion from close proximity that left nothing but his flak jacket. I was just 1.5 meters away, and this traumatic experience marked the beginning of my struggle with PTSD (Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder).

Upon leaving the army, I passed the mandated hearing test, but the psychological impact lingered on with me. The mental wounds of that day continue to affect not just myself, but countless others who have served. PTSD is a reality for many veterans, originating from the very events that define their bravery and sacrifice.

Despite the physical and mental challenges, veterans facing PTSD often endure inadequate recognition and support for their conditions. According to the National Institute of Mental Health, PTSD affects about 12 million adults in the U.S. during a given year, but for veterans, the rate is significantly higher. Moreover, approximately 11-20% of veterans who served in Operations Iraqi Freedom (OIF) and Enduring Freedom (OEF) suffer from PTSD in any given year, per the Department of Veterans Affairs.

The current support systems are just not enough. We need more comprehensive mental health services tailor-made for veterans, more immediate access to therapy and counseling, and a broader understanding and acknowledgment of their struggles within society. We also need nationwide PTSD screenings as part of veteran healthcare, accessible community-based programs for family support, and policies that ensure veterans aren't left on their own to struggle with this invisible burden.

By signing this petition, you advocate for the implementation of these necessary changes. Let's ensure that those who served their country are provided with the care and recognition they truly deserve. Join me in calling on our leaders to recognize the magnitude of PTSD among veterans and take concrete steps to improve their lives. Sign and stand up for veterans suffering in silence."
