The Issue

Every day, from behind the scenes, I answer calls from individuals experiencing some of the most critical moments of their lives. As a 911 telecommunicator, I am their first point of contact in emergencies, offering calm, reassurance, and necessary guidance. Yet, despite the essential role we play, we are not recognized as first responders. It's time for that to change.

911 telecommunicators are the unsung heroes who manage life-and-death decisions with professionalism and composure. We gather vital information, dispatch emergency services, and offer critical support to panicked and distressed callers. Our role directly impacts the outcome of emergency situations, helping save lives and protecting property.

In 2019, Congress passed the "9-1-1 SAVES Act" to recognize 911 dispatchers as protective service occupations, but this classification is not enough. We need to be acknowledged as first responders, alongside police, fire, and emergency medical personnel. Acknowledgment would not only provide us with well-deserved recognition but also access to additional resources, training, and support that are crucial for performing our duties with even greater efficacy.

Recent statistics highlight that more than 240 million calls are made to 911 in the U.S. annually—calls that demand immediate and precise actions. Despite these staggering numbers and the increasing complexity of emergencies, we lack the formal recognition and benefits that came with being designated as a first responder.

Recognition is essential. It enhances our credibility and ensures we receive the necessary support to continue improving our response capabilities. By recognizing us as first responders, you empower those on the front line to continue putting the public's safety first, every day.

Please join me in urging lawmakers to change our status. Sign this petition to help bring about the needed change to recognize 911 telecommunicators as first responders.
