The Issue

Growing up, I’ve always identified as part of Generation Z, but there's confusion about where exactly it begins and ends. Some say it starts as late as 1997, while others put the cutoff at 2010. Personally, I believe Generation Z should be recognized from 1997 to 2012.

This might seem trivial to some, but the way we identify generationally plays a significant role in understanding our cultural and societal impact. Gen Z is defined by our adaptability to technology, our progressive outlook on social issues, and our unique challenges, such as climate change and economic instability. Growing up in this time frame means experiencing the aftermath of events like 9/11, the 2008 financial crisis in our early years, and the 2020 pandemic affecting our formative teen years.

For those born between 1997 and 2012, our lives have been deeply influenced by rapid technological advancements and an ever-changing social landscape. Classifying these years accurately could help researchers and policymakers better understand our needs and contributions. For instance, Pew Research currently defines Gen Z as starting in 1997, yet many cultural and sociological studies still blur these lines, leading to misrepresentations in studies and media portrayals.

Redefining Gen Z to 1997-2012 is not just about identity; it's also about accurately capturing the experiences of tens of millions of young people in demographic studies, marketing, and social policies. This standardization can improve representation in data collection and public discourse, helping highlight the unique contributions and challenges this generation faces. Accurate generational data helps educators, employers, and mental health professionals provide better support tailored to the distinct experiences of each generation.

Let’s make sure our voices are heard and our experiences are accurately represented. Please sign this petition to call on demographers and social researchers to recognize 1997-2012 as the definitive range for Generation Z. Together, we can ensure that our stories and realities are part of the wider narrative.
