Recognition and Protection of Indigenous Rights in Jamaica

Recognition and Protection of Indigenous Rights in Jamaica
The Issue
As descendants of the Original People of Jamaica, we have been witnessing a disturbing trend. In recent years, many decisions made by the Government of Jamaica Ltd. do not reflect our interests but instead cater to foreigners who have invested in our corporation and exploited our natural and human resources. This is not only an affront to us as a people but also a violation of our indigenous rights.
Our connection to this land runs deep, as does the pain we feel when we see it misused and abused. We are no longer willing to sit idly by while these injustices continue unaddressed. The government's disregard for our rights is not just an issue for us; it affects all Jamaicans who believe in justice, equality, and respect for all peoples.
According to the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples (UNDRIP), adopted by General Assembly Resolution 61/295 on 13 September 2007, indigenous peoples have the right to maintain their distinct political, legal, economic, social, and cultural institutions while retaining their right to participate fully, if they so choose, in the political life of the state (Article 5). Yet, these rights are being blatantly ignored by our own government.
We demand immediate acknowledgment from the Government of Jamaica Ltd., along with concrete steps towards protecting our indigenous rights and freedom over the land that has been ours since time immemorial. We call upon every Jamaican who believes in justice to join us in demanding change now! Please sign this petition today.
