Recognise adenomyosis and endometriosis as a disability in Ireland
The Issue
Five years ago, I was diagnosed with adenomyosis, a condition that has drastically impacted my daily life. Like many women in Ireland, I have suffered in silence, enduring excruciating pain every day, searching for answers and enduring the frustration of finding limited support and understanding. This petition is not just for me but for countless women who face similar struggles every day without adequate recognition or support.
Adenomyosis and endometriosis are debilitating conditions that affect the lives of thousands of women in Ireland. Despite being recognised by medical professionals as serious conditions, they are still not considered disabilities, leaving many women unable to access essential support and resources. These conditions cause severe pain, exhaustion, and emotional distress, making everyday activities a challenge. The current ignorance towards these conditions contributes to the suffering of many women who need immediate change.
Adenomyosis and endometriosis lack a definitive cure, and in many cases, a hysterectomy is presented as the only option. However, this drastic surgery is not a guaranteed solution and can have significant life-changing consequences. Women deserve to have their conditions recognised and receive support tailored to their needs, without resorting to such extreme measures.
Inclusion of these conditions as recognised disabilities would allow women access to financial support, medical benefits, and workplace accommodations. This change would improve the quality of life for many women, allowing them the dignity and respect they deserve in managing these challenging conditions.
I urge the Irish government and relevant health authorities to acknowledge the gravity of adenomyosis and endometriosis by classifying them as disabilities. This recognition is a critical step in ensuring that women who suffer from these conditions receive the care and support they need to live fulfilling lives.
Please sign this petition to advocate for these much-needed changes and support the countless women who live in silence with these debilitating conditions every day. Your signature could bring about the recognition and support that countless women in Ireland so desperately need.
