The Issue

Growing up in West Virginia, I’ve often stared at various maps grouping the United States by region. Each time, I found myself puzzled, and at times frustrated, by how my home state is frequently categorized as part of the "South". There it is, West Virginia, awkwardly jutting out to the north, far from the actual south. It just doesn’t make sense.

For those of us who reside in West Virginia, cultural and geographical ties more closely align us with the Mid-Atlantic and Northeastern states rather than with the Southern states. With its beautiful mountain landscapes, rich industrial history, and the proximity to Washington D.C. and other Mid-Atlantic hubs, West Virginia shares distinct connections that set it apart from states traditionally associated with the South.

Statistically, West Virginia’s climate, economic patterns, and sociopolitical attitudes resonate closely with Mid-Atlantic states like Pennsylvania and Maryland. For example, in terms of climate data, West Virginia experiences weather patterns more typical of the northern regions compared to the Southern states. Economically, West Virginia's industries, such as coal mining and tourism, share similarities with its northern neighbors, further aligning it with the Mid-Atlantic region.

Moreover, there is a significant cultural overlap in terms of shared historical events and a blend of cultural practices with nearby Mid-Atlantic states that isn't as pronounced with Southern states. These connections are pivotal for residents who feel their identity and lifestyle are more connected to the North than the South.

I propose that West Virginia be recognized and reclassified as part of the Mid-Atlantic region. Taking this step would not only honour historical accuracy but would also offer numerous strategic benefits related to tourism, education, and economic partnerships. Such reclassification could pave the way for better regional integration, resulting in developmental initiatives more tailored to our state's unique needs.

By moving West Virginia into the Mid-Atlantic region, we can foster a stronger, more accurate portrayal of our state's identity and affiliations. It’s about time we realigned these classifications with reality, recognizing the true character and position of West Virginia, so help us out here and sign this petition!
