The Issue

I am a dedicated foster for the AZ Piggy Network in Arizona, and at this very moment, I am caring for 13 foster pigs who have tragically lost their homes. These beloved animals were wrenched away from their environments not because they were unwanted, but due to a classification discrepancy that determined them as livestock rather than as pets. This issue is rooted in municipal and HOA regulations that fail to recognize the true nature of pot belly pigs and minipigs. These precious creatures end up being rehomed, not because they aren’t cherished by their families, but because of local laws and ordinances that force this heartbreaking reality upon them.

Pot belly pigs and minipigs stand out as beautiful companions, much like a dog or a cat, and contrary to popular belief, they are exceptionally clean, outmatching many traditional pets in terms of hygiene. They are the fifth smartest animals, capable of being litter trained and house trained, offering an alternative to those allergic to conventional pets like cats and dogs. They are loving, loyal companions deserving the same recognition and status as any family pet.

Yet, so many face separation from their homes. We are proposing that pot belly pigs and minipigs be reclassified to reflect their true nature—as pets rather than livestock. This reclassification would alleviate the stress these animals and their owners face, helping keep these intelligent, sociable animals in loving homes where they belong. Moreover, educating potential pig owners about their needs and natural size could prevent future heartaches. Contrary to some breeders' claims, these animals continue to grow for up to five years, reaching potentially up to 300lbs, which underscores the importance of informed adoption.

Pot belly pigs and minipigs are immensely trainable and deeply affectionate, they deserve the chance to live alongside their human families without fear of forced separation. With your support, we could drive the positive change needed to prevent unreasonable rehoming of these animals.

Join me in asking local governments and homeowners' associations to see the real value these animals bring. Let’s work together to keep these lovable, intelligent animals in the places they truly belong—in our homes and hearts. Please sign this petition to reclassify pot belly pigs and minipigs as pets, not livestock, allowing them the joyous, loving lives they deserve.
