Reclassify Millennials Born 1980-1985 Into Generation X

The Issue

I feel burdened by the label that society has chosen to place upon me. I was not guided through life with a smartphone in hand, nor did I fuel my adolescence with the rapid evolution of the internet. My identity resonates more with Generation X, characterized by post-World War II baby boomers, than millennials. I am one of the countless born between 1980-1985, and I am writing this petition in hopes that we may be recognized as part of Generation X.

The delineation of generations is more than just a convenient label; it shapes myriad aspects of our lives - from how we communicate to our economic circumstances. According to CBS News, millennials are considered to be born between 1981 and 1996, while Gen X refers to those born from the mid-1960s to 1980. Undeniably, those of us born between 1980-1985 transitioned into adulthood straddling the demarcation line between these two generations, which makes our alignment with either one ambiguous.

Our lived experiences align more with Gen X - we witnessed substantial social and economic change, we observed technology reshape the world like never before, and we are often overlooked in societal discourses leaning heavily towards younger millennials or older Generation X members.

Let us correct the narrative that fails to capture our unique and transitional experiences. Let us reclassify the years 1980-1985 from millennial to Generation X. This small but meaningful change would contribute to a more accurate recognition of our generation's impact, experiences, and influences on society. Sign this petition to urge generational researchers and institutions that handle these classifications to reevaluate and redefine the boundaries that distinguish our generation.
