Our close-knit community in Darby, MT, deeply cherishes our local high school sports teams, whose success and camaraderie have always been a source of pride for all of us. Recently, a reclassification decision has moved our beloved Darby High School from Class C to a higher class, significantly impacting our athletes and coaches.

This change has created an environment where our student-athletes face tougher competition from larger schools, putting them at a disadvantage. It is not a reflection of their talent or dedication but simply an outcome of being mismatched against schools with bigger student bodies and more resources. This conundrum not only affects the morale of our students but also puts undue pressure on our devoted coaches who strive to bring out the best from our athletes with limited resources.

To put this into perspective, Class C classification has always allowed schools of similar size and capability to compete fairly, fostering a healthy competitive spirit and providing an even playing field. The leap to a higher class has altered that balance drastically, escalating challenges without proportionate benefits. Our athletes should be allowed to grow and thrive in an equitable setting rather than being weighed down by the sheer disparities larger schools present.

We are due for reevaluation to reclassify Darby High School back to Class C, where our students and coaches can fairly compete, develop, and create cherished memories in an environment befitting their capacities. This move would ensure that Darby High stays true to its values by supporting every student's potential to succeed, without overwhelming them with unbalanced challenges.

Our plea to the Montana High School Association is to reconsider their decision and realign Darby High School with Class C schools once more.
