Reclassify Andrea Herrera at the University of Oregon
The Issue
This petition is to show student, faculty, and community support for Andrea P. Herrera, Ph.D. (they/them/theirs) in their petition for reclassification at the University of Oregon from a Pro-Tem Instructor to a Senior Instructor I.
Dr. Herrera is a sociologist, Pro-Tem Instructor & Faculty Director at the University of Oregon, and LGBTQIA+ Scholar of Women's Gender and Sexuality Studies. They have been teaching university courses since 2008 in Texas and Oregon across the fields of sociology, ethnic studies, rhetoric/composition, and women’s, gender, and sexuality studies, including developmental (“remedial”) writing courses at the pre-freshman level as well as advanced social theory seminars offered in honors college departments. Dr. Herrera’s award-winning pedagogy has been described by students as “transformative” and is based on the principle that good teaching critically reorients students to society (an idea derived from the work of scholar Paolo Freire).
Dr. Herrera is a standout educator who centers student support and safety above all else, advocating for LGBTQIA+ community members across the field of education and society at large. They are more than deserving of reclassification to ensure a higher salary to better support their family and community, as well as gain better job security. Dr. Herrera is an invaluable addition to the education field and the University of Oregon.
