The Issue

The East Devon National Landscape (EDNL) is one of the most beautiful and important natural areas in the county, with historic cliffs, rivers, hills, wildlife, and unique landscapes that define our local identity. However, since losing its former Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB) status, the area now has weaker legal protection in planning law. This makes it easier for development pressure, industrial proposals, housing schemes, and environmental damage to threaten land that should be strictly protected.

We are calling for the EDNL to regain full AONB status, giving it the strongest possible legal protection against inappropriate development. This campaign is about safeguarding East Devon’s natural beauty, wildlife, heritage, and future generations’ right to enjoy this landscape. Our countryside is not replaceable; once it’s gone, it’s gone. We must act now to protect it properly.
