Reclaim Public Access to the Pelham Courts
The Issue
Reclaim Public Access to the Pelham Courts
As adult members of the Pelham and beach community, we are concerned by upcoming changes to the beach court reservations—set to go into effect on May 2nd—that further limit access to a space many of us rely on for recreation, connection, and community.
What was once a vibrant, balanced environment for players of all levels has become increasingly difficult to access, especially during after-work hours. We appreciate that one night each week is currently dedicated to adult league play, but with limited spots available, many players are left without a chance to participate at all. Outside of that single league night, there are no free weeknight opportunities for casual or community play.
To make matters worse, the courts were closed for nearly two months at the end of 2024 for “maintenance,” yet no noticeable improvements were made until the final week. That extended closure, followed by restricted public access, has had a lasting impact on the beach volleyball community in Birmingham.
We’re not asking for exclusivity—just fairness and consideration. A few steps could help restore balance and ensure the courts remain a shared space for everyone:
• Designate two nights per week as free public play nights, open and accessible to all.
• Most importantly, add two new public, unreservable courts. This one change could dramatically reduce scheduling conflicts, relieve pressure on existing courts, and guarantee more consistent access for the broader community.
Recreational spaces like the Pelham courts should be inclusive, not exclusive. We urge local officials to reconsider the new policy and implement these community-driven solutions that support fairness, access, and shared enjoyment of the sport. By signing this petition, you’re standing with a community that values health, connection, and the power of play.
Thank you for your support.
